I am a painter printmaker inspired by the landscapes of Mid-Wales. I work in the British romantic tradition, following in the footsteps of Samuel Palmer and the later neoromantic artists of the 1940s. While some of my landscapes are from my imagination, many depict real places such as Aberystwyth where I did my degree in the late 80s, and Pentre'r Beirdd in Powys where I have lived and worked over the last 10 years.
The recurrent theme in my work is our relationship to nature whether in a realistic or surreal depiction of our internal or external worlds. Landscape for me is often a protective place, an escape or safe environment away from the demands of the modern world. I currently work from a studio in London next to the Thames Barrier, and find my creative mind works best in the separation from the places I am depicting.
